The implications of an ageing population

It has been well-publicised that the UK has an ageing population and that the burden of supporting an increasing number of retired people is falling upon a decreasing number of people of working age. However, the workforce is also ageing and many organisations have not yet factored this reality into their strategic planning.

There is not only a reduced number of working people in the current 25 to 45 age group, this trend is set to continue (see the table below prepared by East Dorset Council using data from the Office of National Statistics). There are also insufficient skilled workers within this generation to meet projected demand.

The current economic downturn may be obscuring this fact. A return to growth, though, will see increased demand and companies will be competing for a finite resource.

Forward thinking companies are seeing the importance of retaining good people. The high cost of recruitment has always been a reason for doing so but increasingly there is a danger that the people you want just may not be available.
